You can’t turn on the television these days without hearing people shout, “Not my king!” But every time I hear that phrase, I can’t help but think of CeCe Winans’ song “That’s My King.” When that song comes on my playlist, I want to throw my fist in the air and shout right back, “That’s MY King!” It’s not what the protestors have in mind when they chant, but what they fail to realize is this — there already is a King. His name is Jesus Christ. And whether people believe it or not, He reigns.
The irony is that at my church, we just began a new sermon series called “Majoring on the Majors,” focusing on the central teachings of Jesus. As Pastor Buddy likes to remind us, “If it’s important to Jesus, it ought to be important to us.” And what was most important to Jesus? The Kingdom of God. He tells us, “Seek first the Kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). In fact, Jesus talked about His Kingdom more than 200 times in the Gospels, declaring to Pilate, “My Kingdom is not of this world” (John 18:36). His Kingdom isn’t built on politics, geography, or race — it’s built on grace. In Christ, every nation and people become one, united under the reign of a heavenly King. Now that’s something to get excited about!
If you’ve followed my blogs for a while, you know I haven’t always sought God’s Kingdom first. But recently, as I was working on devotionals for our church’s Fellowship and Matthew 28:19 Project Facebook pages — okay, full confession — I’ve been using Pastor Buddy’s sermon notes each week to help me write. As I read through one of his outlines, a question hit me: Do I even know how to seek the Kingdom of God?
So, how do we seek it? We pursue it daily — through prayer, studying His Word, memorizing Scripture, worship, repentance, and thankfulness. Paul says, “Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:17–18). The Psalmist writes, “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word… Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:9, 11). Jesus Himself said, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17).
And when we “enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise” (Psalm 100:4), something begins to shift inside us. Our hearts start to align with His. Seeking the Kingdom stops being a moment — it becomes a lifestyle. Through faith, words, and actions, we begin to reflect the heart of our King. And in true God fashion, I realized I’d already been doing that without even realizing it. God is sneaky like that!
Here’s what else I learned: the Kingdom of God isn’t just something that’s coming someday. It’s already here — alive in the hearts of believers. Jesus said, “The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). He’s not waiting to sit on His throne. He already reigns — with all authority in Heaven and on Earth (Matthew 28:18). That truth brings me peace even when the world feels like it’s falling apart. I don’t fear what’s coming, because I know who is already in control. The King is on the throne — ruling with justice, compassion, holiness, and love. There’s no one like Him — no one worthy of the title King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19:16).
That’s my King, y’all.
I once heard someone describe Jesus this way: You can’t impeach Him. He’s the greatest philosopher, the centerpiece of civilization. He is the grandest idea in literature. He stands alone — invincible, unique, supreme. He has no predecessor, and He has no successor. He’s not going to resign. There was nobody before Him, and there will be nobody after Him.
No politician will ever hold that kind of authority. Not even the antichrist — though many will try, all will fail. Only Jesus Christ is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
And that’s my King, ya’ll.
